BASIC LIFE SUPPORT REFRESHER

This course is aimed at qualified Basic Ambulance Assistants (BAA) who wish to update their professional knowledge and stay current in their skills and also as requirement by HPCSA to be refreshed every two years.

The course includes lectures and practical sessions on common medical and trauma emergencies, pediatric and obstetric emergencies, and published science updates on inpatient care.

Upon completing the course and successful completion of a written assessment, a continuing professional development (CPD) certificate is issued to the candidates.

Course duration: 2 weeks

CEUs: 15 (including 5 CEUs for ethics)

Prerequisite: Currently registered with HPCSA

 

BASIC LIFE SUPPORT CPG UPDATE.

BASIC LIFE SUPPORT CPG`s: The HPCSA has updated the Clinical Practice guidelines for all practitioners.

All Basic Ambulance Assistants are required to attend a CPG update, so that they can continue practising in accordance with the new guidelines.
The programme consists of the completion , attendance at a two day classroom session, and being successful at a post course assessment.

INTERMEDIATE LIFE SUPPORT REFRESHER

This course is aimed at qualified Ambulance Emergency Assistant (AEA) who wish to update their professional knowledge and stay current in their skills.

The course includes lectures and practical sessions on common medical and trauma emergencies, paediatric and obstetric emergencies and published science updates in patient care.

On completion of the course and successful completion of a written assessment, a continuing professional development (CPD) certificate is issued to candidates.

Course duration: 2 days

CEUs: 16 (including 5 CEUs for ethics)

Prerequisite: Current registration as an ILS with the HPCSA

PIER TRAINING

This course is suitable for persons who wish to learn CPR but who do not need a card completion card. This course will give participants the necessary basic skills to assist infants, children, and adults who experience choking, cardiac and respiratory arrest. It may prove invaluable in saving the lives of children and babies of friends, family, colleagues, neighbours, or even complete strangers.

Participants will be provided with a course manual and guided through the course by a qualified CPR instructor and successful completion would allow candidates to receive an attendance certificate.

 

MANAGEMENT OF OBSTETRIC EMERGENCIES

Management of Obstetrics Emergency – This course is a skill and drills programme that was developed to train Gauteng EMS operational employees on maternity to combat the high rate of maternal deaths. The programme aims to improve the availability and quality of care for women suffering from obstetric emergency by building capacity and confidence of healthcare professionals to enable them to work effectively and efficiently.

The programme consists of the completion , attendance at one day classroom session, and being successful at a post course assessment and issued with a certificate.

COVID-19 SOP`s – the workshop is developed to establish multi sectoral coordination at both provincial and district level for COVID 19 preparedness and response, to also strengthen capacity to undertake surveillance for covid 19 , to ensure that the healthcare system is prepared to receive, manage and report on the clinical progress of person with COVID 19 in such a way as to minimize the risk to EMS operational staff and maximize good patient care.

The workshop consists of attendance at 3 hours duration only.

ADVANCED CARDIAC LIFE SUPPORT (ACLS)

The ACLS ( Advance cardiac life support)course is aimed at nurses, advanced life support (ALS) paramedics and medical practitioners (GPs and specialists) who wish to improve and/or update their advanced management of adult patients in cardiac arrest and post-cardiac arrest, and arrhythmia management. Use of medications for these cases is included in the course. A section of the course is dedicated to basic and advanced airway management techniques and devices. Recognition and early management of acute coronary syndromes (ACS) and stroke are also covered during the course.

Participants will practise skills and patient management in the form of scenarios on specially designed, state-of-the-art computerised equipment.

After successful completion of the course (written and practical assessment), participants will receive an American Heart Association (AHA) certificate which is valid for two years.

Course duration: 2 days
CEUs: 34 (including 4 CEUs for ethics)

Prerequisite: Current basic life support for healthcare providers certification

BASIC LIFE SUPPORT FOR HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS (BLS)

Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS). This course is aimed at healthcare professionals who need to perform CPR with the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) on adults, children, and infant patients in various settings.

Participants will receive a course manual and be guided through the video-based course by an AHA (American Heart Association) qualified instructor. On successful completion of the course (written and practical assessment), participants will receive an AHA certificate and card which is valid for two years.

Course duration: 6 hours

CEUs: 11 points

PATIENT REPORT FORM

The TPH-99 – This programme is developed for Gauteng Emergency Medical Services staff who works daily with patients. Patient report forms are actually legal documents, that provide a record of assessment and treatment for other medical professionals who may treat the patient.

If that record is incomplete or inaccurate, somebody may provide additional patient treatment that is harmful to the patient’s health. If you get sued, patient report forms are a record of the patient treatment you gave, and a solid defence in court. If you state a fact in court that is not on the patient report form, it can be rejected as a defence. The programme aims at teaching the staff to fill the patient report forms correctly and accurately.

The programme includes practicals and takes a duration of 3 hours, certificate and 3 ECU points
